VoIP, not just for Business Anymore

Private consumers are among the many users of VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol). Although it's been around for a few years now, residential use hasn't yet reached the quality enjoyed by businesses in some markets. That's because large companies have improved their connectivity with dedicated access lines and other technology that individuals don't yet have. As a result the home user depends on the Internet provider for service as well as a low usage area.

In other words, the private caller may not be able to clearly hear the person they're trying to talk to or calls may even drop off. It's the same sort of problems many of us faced when we first started using the Internet. As it became more popular, service providers knew they had to step up or lose the business. The same is expected to happen with VoIP, as it will most likely replace the phone service we've been using for so long.

You can see this in action if you surf the Internet looking for VoIP service providers. There are websites you can visit to look for pricing, availability, features, and even ratings. You'll find that some companies clearly have more to offer than others. It remains to be seen if we'll see monopolies such as developed in the telephone industry. Hopefully, the government won't have to step in to keep VoIP providers in line.

The two main reasons individuals like VoIP are the money saving features and the fact that you can make and receive phone calls from any computer with Internet access, no matter where in the world it is. When it comes to cost, people no longer have to pay long- distance charges, special taxes, and things like caller ID and voice messaging are included with the service. Each company offers different plans, so like anything else you're studying, you'll need to shop and compare.
