VOIP Telephony

VoIP Telephony is Here to Stay

Telephony is one of those words that doesn't look quite right. We're all used to seeing the word "telephone", so why change it? If you've ever worked for a corporation or fairly large business, you've learned a certain amount of "business speak". Each year there are new terms and phrases that describe tasks we do everyday. For example instead of talking with someone you may instead interface with them. You take a meeting rather than attending it. Telephony has become a broad term that refers to telecommunications or things related to talking on the telephone. VoIP telephony is the next big thing that's already happening.

VoIP stands for voice over Internet Protocol and means that you can make phone calls via the Internet. You need a high-speed connection such as broadband or DSL because they use digital signals. Normal phone calls are made with analog signals and VoIP telephony converts them into digital so that they are sent as data. If all of that sounds like more than you want to know, just think of it as a new technology that will save you a lot of money.

That's the main attraction to VoIP telephony for the average consumer. Instead of paying for lines, government required fees, extra taxes, and long-distance charges; you usually just pay a much lower flat rate to your VoIP telephony provider. Other pluses are the fact that you can make your calls from any Internet connection no matter where in the world you are and you can often choose your area code and keep your old phone number.

If you think back a few years, you may remember when computers were new and it didn't seem like they were that big a deal. The same goes for cell phone use. Now of course most of us have at least one of each and depend on them for many of our everyday uses and needs. In the not-too-distant future, we'll be saying the same things about VoIP telephony. Most telecommunication professionals predict that it will replace our current calling methods.
