VOIP System

Which VoIP System is Right for Your Needs?

VoIP stands for voice over Internet Protocol. Most of us are familiar with computers by now, but we mainly type or click our way through what we want to see or write. Some years ago, someone decided it would be great to actually speak to others through them, thus the beginning of the VoIP system. In recent years it's become a really hot topic and many consumers and businesses are using their Internet connections to actually make phone calls. In fact, many are predicting that this system will soon replace what is quickly becoming known as POTS (plain old telephone service).

Currently there are three main types of VoIP systems:
  • PC to PC-this is where two people each sitting at a computer in different locations talk to one another. Once the main way of using a VoIP system, this is probably the least popular right now. The main reason is that in most cases both users need to have the same system so that they can connect. The benefit is that you don't need any hardware you probably don't already have; your computer, speakers, sound card, and microphone. It works in certain circumstances, but for general use, the others are more popular
  • Handset thru Internet-this method is probably used by the most consumers. When they sign up with a service provider, this VoIP system lets them use their regular telephone. The provider will give them an adapter that plugs into their computer. It adapts the words the callers say into digital signals that are then sent over the Internet. These calls are much cheaper than those made over phone lines and the technology has developed to the point where in many cases the quality is quite good
  • IP Phone-these are telephones with a VoIP system (software) installed. It can be plugged directly into a router that's connected to the Internet. These phones are popular with business people and recreational travelers. The phones are completely portable and can just plug into a computer anywhere the user is
VoIP systems are just one more stunning example of where our technology can take us.
