VoIP Offers Many of the Same Services as Land Lines- and More!

Voice over Internet Protocol replaces our old telephone lines with the capability of making and receiving calls over the Internet. If this sounds strange and impossible to you, you'll need to rethink that. The fact is that it's here to stay and will at some point be the preferred method of calling. In fact traditional phone companies are rapidly jumping on the bandwagon and starting to offer VoIP services. Cable companies are also in the mix as they can offer television, Internet, and telephone all on one bill. In many cases they're selling these combinations for a package-rate price.

So what exactly do VoIP services consist of? The simple answer is just about anything you want. The two biggest attractions to consumers is the huge savings on long-distance calls and the convenience of portability. Instead of paying so much per minute, as well as line costs, taxes, and a lot of mysterious fees, you'll generally pay a flat rate for VoIP. Not only that, but it's usually as much as half what you were paying for basic phone service. Long-distance calls are often free or in some cases there is a low rate per minute. If you choose to buy a special IP phone, you can take it with you anywhere in the world. Just plug it into the nearest computer with a high-speed connection and you can make and receive calls just as if you were home.

You can also get all those features that you have on your landline and cell phones. Some of these included in the list of VoIP services are:

• Plans as low as $10 per month
• Free long-distance and regional calls
• Some charge several cents a minute after a fixed number of free long-distance minutes
• Many let you choose your area code and keep your old number
• Take your IP phone or regular phone with adapter all over the world
• Free call waiting, forwarding, caller ID, conferencing and other extras you may normally pay for

VoIP has other more sophisticated services that you may choose to pay for.

There are a few drawbacks. One is quality, although that's continually improving. Your VoIP won't work in a power outage, but if you also carry a cell phone, you'll be all right. There is one thing missing among many VoIP services, although it's being worked on…that is accessibility to 911. It's already being addressed in big cities and more service providers will soon have that capability.
