VoIP Phone Service may be Right for You

If you spend anytime surfing the Internet you've probably read about VoIP phone service. You may also have heard about it at work, through friends, or in school. Our world is all about technology and this is one that's been around for a few years, but is finally coming into its own. Voice over Internet Protocol is a phone service that lets you make and receive phone calls via your computer. You do need a high-speed connection such as DSL or broadband in order for it to work.

If you know anything about transferring data you know that information is broken down into packets and sent in sections. When it reaches its final destination, it's all back the way it should be…in one piece. That of course is a very simple explanation, but it tells us how VoIP phone service works as well. When you make a call through your online connection, your conversation is broken down into digital bits and sent over the Internet as data. It's expected that this will eventually replace telephone service as we know it.

VoIP phone service has been with us for a while, but nowadays the technology is greatly improved from its early incarnation. In fact once used by businesses only, many people are now adopting it for home use. There are several ways to use VoIP phone service:

• Using an adapter provided by your IP provider so you can use your regular phone
• Actually talking through your computer with a microphone
• Buying a specially made IP telephone

Probably the most common is using the adapter as there isn't usually an extra cost involved. If you travel and want to make and receive calls anywhere in the world, you should purchase an IP phone. You take that with you, plug it into any Internet enabled computer with an Ethernet cord, and start calling.

As you can see, we are getting more technologically savvy everyday. Computers have become commonplace in most homes and it seems as if their functions are practically endless.
