Online Degrees Online

Studying for a College Degree Online Gives you Flexibility and Convenience

One of the greatest benefits of the Internet is the ability to do things remotely - everything from communication to schooling. Now thousands enroll in various programs each year in order to study at their own pace and complete most of their work from their home computers. Various online colleges and universities offer a variety of degrees online. Even high school degrees are available. This is great for adults that never finished. Studying online saves them the embarrassment of letting anyone know in person that they lack a high school diploma -- they can complete their courses in the privacy of their homes.

Not only are there a number of degrees programs available online, you even have choices about how you wish to attend. With so many colleges and universities participating, you can select the method that works best for you. Although the overall format is similar, there are differences between schools, such as:

  • Required attendance in one or two classes at a campus site
  • Online attendance requirements vary from 2-5 days each week
  • Class length, i.e. 5-10 weeks per quarter
  • Participation through email newsgroups, streaming audio or visual media
  • Enrollment requirements

Just as with any land-based campus, online schools have entrance requirements. If you enroll in a college degrees program online and already have some college credits, they may or may not transfer. The online college or university of your choice will assign you an academic counselor that will help you with those issues. In cases where the school won't accept particular credits, you often have the option of passing a test in that discipline to avoid repeating courses.

In addition to colleges, universities, and other schools established strictly as online sites, many traditional colleges have added distance learning to their programs. People today want convenience and flexibility in their lives. Everyone is busy with work, family, and social lives…most of us don't have enough hours in the day. When you throw school into that mix, it's another big block of time. Students often jump at the chance to take their classes toward a degree online. It saves them hours of commute time as well as parking hassles and room and board expenses.

The ability to earn a degree online is yet another example of a positive use of the Internet.
