Distance Learning Degrees - Legitimate or Diploma Mill?

Online education sounds like a great idea. You enroll in a class, complete the work over the Internet, and hopefully, receive a diploma at the end of the process. And, in many instances, it works out just like that. There are a number of excellent distance learning programs that offer degrees. Unfortunately, there are just as many (if not more) programs that award distance learning degrees that are completely bogus.

When it comes time to make the investment in your education, you want to make sure you spend your money wisely. While fake diplomas may lure some less than scrupulous people that merely want to trick prospective employers, most people that are enrolling in distance learning do so because of a legitimate want or need to improve their education.

While it's difficult to always tell whether an institution is legitimate or not, one of the first criteria is to find out if the college is accredited. There are over 300 unaccredited online universities, all of them willing to take your money and run. Besides the accreditation, beware of a university that is willing to accept work experience as a replacement for actual course work. Too often, these colleges mask their diploma mill status by suggesting that work experience is sufficient information.

Think about it - the point of enrolling in a class is to learn something in an entirely new way, to develop a level of knowledge you didn't have before. Everyone can learn something from a class, no one is truly capable of being a complete "know-it-all".

Many of these fake colleges also offer diplomas for outrageous fees. It is expensive to go to college, whether it's online or at a brick and mortar institution. But that expense is more than worth it in the long run. If a college offers you a degree with little training or classes, and lots of cash up front, you know you've come across a scam.

Distance learning degrees are very worth, when earned. Don't be tempted by short cuts, but instead find a quality college so that you can be proud of your efforts and reap the benefits of your hard work.
