Finding the Best Distance Learning Colleges

Distance learning colleges have really opened the door to education for many people that otherwise would not be able to attend college. Most often, these distance education programs are offered over the Internet, and merely require the student to have access to an Internet connection.

If you do a simple Internet search on distance learning colleges, you'll find that there are literally hundreds of such colleges and universities. How exactly do you evaluate which college is the best for your needs?

There are two primary considerations when evaluating distance learning colleges: what programs or educational courses are offered and whether the schools are accredited or not.

Of course, you'll want to pursue a program at a school that is most inline with your long term goals. If you aren't sure what career path you want to consider, many of the online colleges offer basic classes. These classes aren't part of your overall major, but are necessary for graduation. Classes like history, basic math and sciences, basic English composition, even some foreign languages are all early requirements.

Once you've taken the basic courses, you'll need to decide on a major. Are you planning a career in accounting, real estate, law, business management, education, health care, etc. You want to make sure that the college you enroll in has a well rounded course offering of classes in your major. If there doesn't seem to be enough classes, or if the college is offering to waive classes in favor of "life experience" this may be a program you want to avoid.

Another factor to consider is whether the credits you receive from the online university will transfer in the future. If you decide to get some of the beginning classes out of the way, will they transfer to a state university? Or, should you decide to get an advanced degree, will a university consider your online program as meeting the basic requirements for entry into a master's program? Most online universities will answer these questions before you enroll in their program.

Of course, one of the most important considerations is whether the program is accredited or not. Most universities and colleges are certified by a national educational review board. When they pass this certification process, they are considered accredited. There are a number of considerations in becoming an accredited college, like the course offerings, the experience and education level of the staff, etc.

Enrollment in a college is an investment in your future. Before you make any decision about which of the distance learning colleges is the right one for you, do a little homework. A little research will make the difference in your investment being a win or a loss.
