Credit Reports Online

Anything is Possible on the Internet, Even Credit Reports Online

If you aren't already aware, it's important to take a look at your credit report at least once a year to make sure that all the information is correct. It may not qualify as a priority in your book until you try to make a major purchase and you have problems. You're probably used to assuming that your report would just naturally be correct. Unfortunately this isn't always the case. Everything is run by computers these days, but it takes humans to input the information. A wrong digit in someone's social security number or recording a payment as late when it was actually on time can give you an undeserved poor rating. Identity theft is rampant, so it's smart to make sure no one else is using yours. To make it more convenient you can now obtain copies of your credit reports online.

In addition, we are now entitled to one free report every year from each of the three main reporting agencies. These aren't as comprehensive as the ones you pay for, but you'll see the most pertinent information. You can also get a look at your credit score to see where you stand if you're thinking of making a large purchase such as a house or car. The three agencies are Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. You can visit their sites individually or find sites that offer all three credit reports online. You should be aware that even though you can obtain free copies, all of the sites will offer upgraded versions for a fee. The best way to decide which ones are the most informative is to compare that is included in the free reports with those that cost. For example the free versions often don't include your actual credit score. You should also know that the different agencies compute the scores differently so they may not all be the same. Unfortunately they don't currently explain how they arrive at the scores, although there is talk of making the process uniform.

As with anything else you do on the web, shop and compare the different sites when you look for credit reports online. The main points you want to be able to check are:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Social Security Number
  • Account balances
  • All payments listed and make sure they show as on time
  • Complete list of accounts
  • Length you've had each one

Ordering credit reports online is definitely easier than calling or writing for them.
