The Magical Properties of Cord Blood

When we take a look back over the history of medical science it’s amazing what discoveries have been made. Even during times when technology was no where near what it is today, things like penicillin, anesthesia, and x-rays performed what seemed like miracles at the time. Now the whole field is being fine-tuned and we have even more dazzling finds such as the use of cord blood to save lives.

Cord blood is the rich several ounces of red blood cells that live in the umbilical cord and placenta of a newborn. When the baby is delivered, if the parents and medical personnel have planned ahead, the cord blood will be collected and stored in a special bank for the future. By storing the baby’s cord blood for possible use in the future, it can literally save a life!

Many parents today are storing their children’s cord blood in special private cord blood banks. That way if the child ever has a life-threatening blood disease, a stem cell transplant using this blood will save the day. Others are also donating the cord blood, but they are giving it to a public donor registry, so that anyone with the same blood type will be able to use it. Whichever method anyone chooses, cord blood storage is a prudent thing to do. A host of diseases and conditions destroy healthy blood, causing many people to die when they may have been saved. Even the ravages of chemotherapy can cause early death. That’s because when chemo destroys unhealthy blood cells, unfortunately it takes the healthy blood as well. All too often the patient can’t recover easily on his or her own.

The future of stem cell transplants with stored cord blood looks excellent. Researchers are studying a number of new ways to restore sick people to good health. In addition to blood cancers, different types of anemia, and other diseases, they are also looking into restoring spinal cord injury victims to mobility and helping diabetics’ lead normal lives. And it looks like this is only the beginning of what is possible. Cord blood is truly a cure that can seem like magic to anyone who needs it.
